In 1961, Unsworth became an organiser of the Electrical Trades Union, and continued to build his career in the labour movement and was awarded a Churchill Fellowship in 1966 to attend Harvard University, Trade Union Program.
Further study was undertaken in 2002-2003 on a Churchill Fellowship at the University of Creation Spirituality in Oakland, California.
He was awarded a Churchill Fellowship in 1985 to study operetta production in Europe, and he subsequently directed many stage productions, including Gilbert and Sullivan operas, Countess Maritza and The Czardas Princess by Emmerich Kálmán, and the Mozart operas The Abduction from the Seraglio and Così fan tutte.
Noren was the Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellow at the National Academy of Sciences and U.S. Congress, and a Churchill Fellow in the United Kingdom.
