He began to concentrate on landscapes, especially in Italy where his travels took him to Rome and especially on several occasions to Civita d'Antino from 1900 to 1904.

After an early encounter with the French Symbolists, he took an interest in the Italian Renaissance period before turning to the more relaxed style of Naturalism in Skagen and Civita d'Antino.
By contrast, his bright, colourful works from Italy, above all those from Civita d'Antino such as Motiv fra en Procession i Appenninerne reveal Zahrtmann's influence.
He traveled for the first time to the mountain town of Civita d'Antino in June 1883, a town he came to consider his second home.
