He attended Townfield Elementary School in Hayes, Middlesex, then Acton County Grammar School, and the Bishop Gore School, Swansea.
However, he was unsuccessful, losing the election to Colin Phipps of the Labour Party.

In 1945, the property was acquired by Griscom Bettle followed by John H. H. Phipps and in 1958 inherited by Colin Phipps.
