Rev. Columba Cary-Elwes, OSB, an author, monastic leader and former titular Abbot of Westminster, was the founding prior (1955–1967) of the Abbey.

He followed the regular course of philosophical studies at St Mary’s Hall, Stonyhurst (181890-1893) and Theology with the French Jesuits, first at Jersey and then Lyons (1897–1901).
Elwes was the son of Sir Gervase Elwes, of Woodford, Essex and his wife Frances, the daughter of Sir Robert Lee of Billesley, Warwickshire.
In 2006 she portrayed feminist and author Gertrude Atherton (b. 1857–1948) opposite Campbell Scott's Ambrose Bierce (b. 1842–1915?) in the film anthology Ambrose Bierce: Civil War Stories. In 2012, Schilling provided the voice of Buttercup in Toys in the Attic alongside co-stars Forest Whitaker, Joan Cusack and Cary Elwes.
