While on a visit to Southern Rhodesia in January 1960, he suffered a heart attack and was confined to bed at Government House; he was returned to Britain but died at his home in Colwall, Herefordshire in April.
Near to the station is the mock Georgian, country house style Colwall Park Hotel, purpose built in 1905 to serve the now defunct Colwall Horse Racecourse.

The village is served by a single platform railway station on the single track line between Great Malvern and Ledbury railway station at Ledbury, which passes through the Colwall Tunnels, the first of which was dug under the Malvern Hills between 1856 and 1860.
After Foliot's failed candidacy as bishop, in February 1216 John appointed him to the benefice of Colwall in Herefordshire, the king having the ability to make the appointment because Giles de Braose, the Bishop of Hereford, who would normally have made the appointment, had recently died.
