The Michigan State Geologist Douglass Houghton (later to become mayor of Detroit) reported on the copper deposits in 1841.

The boulder is a relic of the mining rush to the Michigan Copper Country, and was well known to Native Americans in its location on the west branch of the Ontonagon River, in what is now Victoria Reservoir.
The Kerredge Gallery and the Republic Bank Gallery are both located inside the Copper Country Community Arts Center.
