Based on Cronin's novella entitled Country Doctor, the storylines centred on Dr. Finlay's general medical practice in the fictional Scottish town of Tannochbrae during the late 1920s.
She was born in Worcester, the daughter of a country doctor, and is a graduate of the University of Cape Town and Columbia University.
There were also at least two notable physicians in the family: an uncle, Dr William Allan Dafoe, who was to influence Colin Dafoe's decision to pursue a medical career, and his son Dr Allan Roy Dafoe, who later moved to the remote northern town of Callander, Ontario, where he would rise to international celebrity as the country doctor who delivered the Dionne Quintuplets on May 28, 1934.
Leo Goodwin Sr. was born in 1886 in Lowndes, Missouri, the son of a country doctor who traveled by horse and buggy to treat his patients.
The artist found the proper model for this work with the aid of the Secretary of State, Dr. George Nichols, in the person of an actual country doctor, then representing the town of Jamaica in the legislature.
