The inquiry's final report informs a significant amount of transport policy in New South Wales, including the corporatisation of Sydney Ferries, the reform of CountryLink, and reforms to the fare structure.
Until 1 July 2013 it was also responsible for the administration, operation of passenger services under the CityRail and CountryLink brands as well as maintaining the rail network bounded by Newcastle, Bowenfels, Macarthur and Bomaderry.
In November 1989 Western Road Liners commenced operating a service from Dubbo to Broken Hill under contract to CountryLink as a replacement for the Silver City Comet, followed from June 1990 by another from Canberra to Cootamundra and Bathurst/Dubbo.
