Leijer was born, and largely grew up in, the New South Wales town of Dubbo to a family of Dutch and English heritage.
In January 2004, she recorded a DVD called "Stories to Tell" on a family property near Dubbo where she tells the stories behind her songs.
Two vessels of the Royal Australian Navy have been named HMAS Dubbo, for the town of Dubbo, New South Wales.
This programme now comprises four residential programmes in Sydney, Coffs Harbour and Dubbo in NSW and in Watson, ACT.

Later, on March 24, 1843, a coalition of Sindhi Muslims gathered to liberate Sindh from the occupation of the British East India Company they were led by General Hoshu Sheedi, the fierce battle resulted in the ground of Dubbo, where deaths of over 5000 Sindhis and the execution of many took place.
According to a profile by Lloyd Grove, Allan grew up in Dubbo in the 1950s, preferring reading to the poor television reception in the rural area.
