"If You Were the Woman and I Was the Man" is a duet with Margo Timmins, lead singer of the Cowboy Junkies.
As a studio musician and string arranger he has recorded for Warner Bros., Atlantic, Elektra, Geffen, Polydor, and Capricorn and with artists including R.E.M., Nanci Griffith, Billy Bragg, and the Cowboy Junkies.
It is the second compilation of the band's singles released by RCA in just three years, following 2001's Best of the Cowboy Junkies, and is part of the label's Platinum and Gold Collection series of discount-priced singles anthologies.

All songs are drawn from the band's RCA Records albums: The Trinity Session, The Caution Horses, Black Eyed Man and Pale Sun Crescent Moon.
After their first three releases, they returned to Canada, where Timmins and Anton formed Cowboy Junkies with Timmins’ siblings Margo and Pete.

The label was dormant during the 1990s and early 2000s while the Cowboy Junkies were signed to an American record label, but began to release independently produced albums in the mid-2000s.

Four of Timmins' great-grandchildren are notable entertainers: Margo, Michael and Peter formed the alternative country band Cowboy Junkies, and Cali is an actress.
Among the many bands and musicians featured at Westfest since its debut in 2004 are Cowboy Junkies, Kathleen Edwards, Steve Page of the Barenaked Ladies and many local bands.
