Gapland Road heads east to Crampton's Gap, a mountain pass through South Mountain that provides access to Burkittsville in the Middletown Valley.

In the Battle of Crampton's Gap it was in the van and lost heavily; was held in reserve at Antietam; at Fredericksburg was posted on picket duty, and after the battle went into winter quarters near Falmouth.
It was active at South mountain and Antietam, encamped at Sharpsburg for one week and marched through Crampton's Gap, Leesburg, Warrenton and Stafford Court House to Fredericksburg, where it participated in the battle.

In the early postwar years, Crampton transitioned from piston-engined bombers to jet fighters.
By the mid-20th century, according to Crampton (2001) "cartographers as Arthur H. Robinson and others had begun to see the map as primarily a communication tool, and so developed a specific model for map communication, the map communication model (MCM)".
He was mortally wounded at Crampton's Gap during the Battle of South Mountain.
These new localities may represent a larger fauna, as all lie within a short distance of each other and share many fishes with the nearby and contemporary Foulden fish bed locality (which has not produced tetrapods thus far).
In 1993, the Central Maryland Heritage League, owners of parts of the Fox's Gap battlefield (part of the South Mountain State Battlefield Park, erected and dedicated a commemorative marker near the spot of Garland's death near the earlier 1889 marker erected by Union soldiers of the IX Corps to Gen Jesse L. Reno on Reno Monument Road.

When Gen. Robert E. Lee divided the Army of Northern Virginia in the Maryland Campaign, Garland's brigade was tasked with defending Fox's Gap, one of the passes in the South Mountain chain.
Notable early instances of use included the Battle of Hoover's Gap (where Col. John T. Wilder's "Lightning Brigade" effectively demonstrated the firepower of repeaters), and the Gettysburg Campaign, where two regiments of the Michigan Brigade (under Brig. Gen. George Armstrong Custer) carried them at the Battle of Hanover and at East Cavalry Field.
Crampton was born in 1877 in Redfern, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, the eldest child of Walter James Crampton and Sarah Phillips.
