The Curtiss C-6 is a six-cylinder, water-cooled, inline aircraft engine.
The Japan Air Self-Defense Force has operated a number of transport aircraft from Miho Air Base including Curtiss C-46 Commando (1958), NAMC YS-11s (1969), Kawasaki C-1s (1979) and T-400s (1994).
Built by the Allies during World War II as Namponmao Airfield, the airfield was used primarily as a transport facility during the Burma Campaign 1944-1945 by the Tenth Air Force 4th Combat Cargo Group beginning in June 1945 flying C-46 Commandos as a combat resupply airfield, air-dropping pallets of supplies and ammunition to the advancing Allied forces on the ground.
The Sesquiwing featured a quick change motor mount to accommodate a Curtiss C-6 or Curtiss OX-5 engine, and wheel fairings for speed.
The USAAF returned to Saltby in May 1945 when a detachment of 349th Troop Carrier Group from RAF Barkston Heath with Curtiss C-46 Commandoes to carry British paratroops to Norway.
