Lentz achieved notability as a musician while a student at Brandeis University, when he was awarded a fellowship in composition at Tanglewood in the summer of 1966.

Bowen was working with Harold Budd, James Tenney, Daniel Lentz, Wolfgang Stoerchle and John Baldessari while studying at California Institute of the Arts in the 70's, where he plays guitar, keyboards, synthesizers and sings.
