3 unusual facts about Danson House


Bexleyheath Line

The Bexley Heath Railway led by railway engineer Alfred Bean (owner of Danson House) secured the necessary Act of Parliament to build the line in 1883 but was not until 1 May 1895 that the Bexleyheath Line was finally opened.

Danson House

After Sir John died in January 1800 (being buried in St Mary's churchyard, Lewisham), his son demolished the imposing wings containing kitchens and stables, and built the present stable block (design attributed to George Dance the Younger).

Piranesi Vase

He was a wealthy West Indies proprietor and director of the British East India Company, and displayed it in the landscaped grounds of his neo-Palladian mansion Danson House at Bexley, where the dining room's wallpaintings took up the vase's Bacchic themes.
