The novel chronicles the years of Marie Rogers’s (based on Smedley) tumultuous childhood, struggles in relationships with men (both physical and emotional), time working with the Socialist party, and involvement in the Indian independence movement.

After returning home, she is arrested and interrogated about her involvement with the Indian independence movement.

Marie, still working vigorously as a journalist for The Call and attending school, meets an Indian named Sardar Ranjit Singh.

While at school, Marie meets an Indian who introduces her to the Indian independence movement.
