5 unusual facts about Dead Kennedys


Argentine punk

At the beginning of their career, their sound was heavily influenced by early hardcore punk bands such as Dead Kennedys and Bad Brains; death rock and goth rock bands such as Virgin Prunes, and reggae bands.

The 3tards

The 3tards music has been compared with a wide variety of bands from a large spectrum of genres, including Frank Zappa, The Dead Milkmen, Forgotten Rebels, Dayglo Abortions, Scatterbrain, Helix, Dropkick Murphys, Quiet Riot, M.O.D., The Dead Kennedys, and many more.

The Fartz

The original idea was that the Fartz would simply change their name to 10 Minute Warning, but after one west coast tour with the Dead Kennedys, Blaine decided to quit and was replaced on vocals by Steve Swad (formerly of The Swads).

The Fartz often opened for and toured with other west coast hardcore bands such as the Dead Kennedys and D.O.A. Their song "Buried Alive" appeared on the 1982 Eastern Front Vol. II punk compilation album.

Zeroption

The band played numerous live performances with many punk acts of the day including the Bad Brains, the F.U.'s, D.O.A., the Dead Kennedys, Social Distortion and the Circle Jerks.


Amanda Stepto

She used to be an avid fan of punk music and has been spotted wearing t-shirts from the bands Scum, The Mission, The Cult, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Sick of it All, Corrosion Of Conformity, and Dead Kennedys.

Annihilation Principle

The album includes a cover version of punk band Dead Kennedys' "Holiday in Cambodia", and European versions contain two bonus live tracks recorded at the Dynamo Open Air Festival in Holland.

Dave Rubinstein

At the Rock Against Racism shows in the early 1980s, Reagan Youth shared the bill with Dead Kennedys, U.S. Chaos, Agnostic Front, Bad Brains, Beastie Boys, and others.

Final Warning

Among them: Dead Kennedys, Scream, Dr. Know, The Exploited, Charged GBH, Hüsker Dü, Minutemen, D.R.I. and Mercyful Fate, but they never played outside the Pacific Northwest.

Manifesto Records

Manifesto Records is the name of an independent record label based in Los Angeles, California that has released records by The Wedding Present, Dead Kennedys, Tom Waits, Tim Buckley, Lilys, Concrete Blonde, Screamin' Jay Hawkins and others.

Mordam Records

Some of these labels included Lookout! Records, Frank Kozik's Man's Ruin, Kill Rock Stars, Jade Tree, and most notably Jello Biafra's Alternative Tentacles Records and Long Gone John's Sympathy for the Record Industry, two labels whose most popular releases were by the Dead Kennedys and The White Stripes, respectively.

Sieg Howdy!

Also featured on the album is an updated version of "California Über Alles" with new lyrics by Biafra about the recall campaign that placed Arnold Schwarzenegger in the California governor's office, as well as "Those Dumb Punk Kids (Will Buy Anything)", a song where Biafra openly criticizes his former Dead Kennedys bandmates.

Stoked: The Rise and Fall of Gator

The film features music from some of the most influential bands of the era and culture, including the Butthole Surfers, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag and Naked Raygun, and an original score by American composer David Reid.

Stomping Ground

The song "The End of the Day" contains a brief sample from the Dead Kennedys's song Nazi Punks Fuck Off.

The Nails

In Colorado, they were originally named The Ravers, and their roadie, Eric Boucher, later became known as Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys.

The Schemers

The band's first live show was a support slot for Sam & Dave, and they also supported Jerry Lee Lewis, Ramones, Tom Verlaine and Dead Kennedys.

Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes

One of the album's tracks, "Back to the Motor League", indirectly refers to two songs by the Dead Kennedys, "Triumph of the Swill" and "Chickenshit Conformist", as well the year of their release on the 1986 album Bedtime for Democracy.

United Mutation

Based in Northern Virginia, United Mutation attracted the interest of household punk names Ian MacKaye who partnered with the band for a split label release on Dischord Records and Jello Biafra who insisted United Mutation open a Washington DC gig for the Dead Kennedys.

In 2001, Peligro rejoined the Dead Kennedys without former frontman and primary songwriter Jello Biafra following a civil fraud complaint against Biafra, accusing him of withholding royalties and creative privilege to license Dead Kennedys songs.
