Born in Oakland, California, Handy attended North Texas State University from 1981 to 1984, and following this played with Art Blakey, Wynton Marsalis, Roy Haynes, Abdullah Ibrahim, Elvin Jones, Joe Henderson, Betty Carter, George Adams, Ray Drummond, Conrad Herwig, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and David Weiss among many others.
Jeffery Smith's musical career included two world tours and four albums with the Claude Bolling Big Band, performances at Jazz at Lincoln Center with Wynton Marsalis and LCJ Orchestra, in tribute to Louis Armstrong, and collaborations with a wide variety of artists such as Dianne Reeves, Kenny Barron, Regina Carter, Joe Lovano, Dee Dee Bridgewater and TK Blue.
Several worldwide great artists have visited Kongsberg during this festival; international stars including Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, John Scofield, Nigel Kennedy, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Charles Mingus, Wayne Shorter, Dianne Reeves, McCoy Tyner, Radka Toneff, Bobby McFerrin, John Butcher, Anthony Braxton, Diana Krall and Pat Metheny have played in Kongsberg several times.
The station also carries selected NPR and other syndicated programs such as: Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz; Riverwalk Jazz, hosted by Jim Cullum; Jazz from Lincoln Center, hosted by Wynton Marsalis; and Dee Dee Bridgewater's Jazz Set.
Moreover, he wrote the lyrics of the song, Precious Things, sung by Dee Dee Bridgewater, in a duet with Ray Charles, which saw success in 1989.

The UCF Orlando Jazz Festival is an annual jazz event hosted at the University of Central Florida founded in 2008 to bring world-class jazz to Orlando, Florida, and has appeared twice on Jazz Set, a program hosted by Dee Dee Bridgewater that appears on Sirius/XM Radio and NPR.
