Many Rutelliani, including Francesco Rutelli himself, eventually left the Democratic Party in order to found the Alliance for Italy on 11 November 2009.

Most recently, Luigi Bobba (1998–2006) has been elected senator for the Democratic Party (PD), the party born in 2007 by the convergence of Democracy is Freedom (DL), in which the PPI was merged in 2002, with the DS, while Andrea Olivero (1998–2006) has been a co-founder of Civic Choice (SC).
UD was founded on 11 September 2007 by two dissenting members of Democracy is Freedom – The Daisy (DL), Willer Bordon (leader of the new party) and Roberto Manzione, and two leading consumer rights leaders, Elio Lanutti and Bruno De Vita, leader of United Consumers, which was integrated in the new party.
The group, whose long-standing leader of the group has been Arturo Parisi, is the bulk of the former party of Prodi, The Democrats and of the former internal opposition within Democracy is Freedom – The Daisy.
Bordon has been a strong supporter of the idea of a "Democratic Party" since 1992, when he left the Democratic Party of the Left to form Democratic Alliance, forerunner of the first Democratic Union, The Democrats and Democracy is Freedom – The Daisy, respectively.
