The neighborhood has long been associated with crime and gang activity, and was generally referred to as the "Dogg Pound" - in reference to the Dogg Pound Crips Gang that claims the neighborhood - by local residents until recent efforts by the community and the city government to change the neighborhood's image.
This led to a response record by Capone-N-Noreaga, Mobb Deep & Tragedy Khadafi called "L.A., L.A.", with a music video in which impersonated Dogg Pound members were thrown off the Queensboro Bridge.
In response Layzie Bone shot back on the track "Shotz to tha Double Glock" with the line "Dogg Pound hoes it's on." "Krayzie Bone says "Gotta find these 'Row Hoes" in the song "Mo' Murda" off the East 99 album. The feud ended when Snoop Dogg and Kurupt were featured on Krayzie Bone's album Thug Mentality 1999 in the song "The War Iz On.
