In the early 17th century, noted Ming art historian Dong Qichang classified Jing Hao and Guan Tong as the two founders of the Northern Landscape style, juxtaposed against the two founders of the southern school, Dong Yuan and Juran, who developed their theories at the same time.
Following the style of Dong Yuan and Li Cheng, he had a talent for painting human figures, landscapes, and horses with saddle.
In 1998, 25 paintings from his collection, including the famous hanging scroll "Riverbank" by 10th century master Dong Yuan, were given to the Metropolitan Museum of New York City.
