Produced by Banton, with contributions from longtime collaborators Donovan Germain, Stephen Marsden and Wyclef Jean, Rasta Got Soul was recorded over a seven-year period before its release.

In 1991, Buju joined Donovan Germain's Penthouse Records label and began a fruitful partnership with producer Dave Kelly who later launched his own Madhouse Records label.
The success of this session led him to continue as a singer, going on to work with producers King Tubby, Prince Jammy, and Donovan Germain, before signing a two-year contract with Steely & Clevie in 1990, recording an album's worth of songs for them.
He is also known for his work with artists under labels other than his own, such as Island In the Sun Productions artist Horace Andy; Narrows Records artist Mr Easy; Donovan Germain Productions artists Audrey Hall, Owen Gray, Tanto Irie, and Johnny Osbourne; and Witty's Music Master Productions artists Shelly Thunder, Junior Wilson, and Barrington Levy.
The album, produced by Donovan Germain, features various artists recorded over re-licks of two classic reggae riddims from Gregory Isaacs.
Collectively the trio of Medhurst, B. Jones and J. Jones (as Rockmelons) have produced (or co-produced): Tales of the City (with Robin Smith), Form 1 Planet (with Smith and Donovan Germain) and Rockies 3 for their own group.

He then went on to record "African Thing" with Prezident Brown (released on Island/Mango), the success of which led him to work with producers such as Bobby "Digital" (Funny, Funny), Donovan Germain (All That Glitters), Steely and Clevie (Hard Core), as well as Grammy award winning prducer Jim Jonsin(who has worked on songs such as Space Bound, by Eminem and Lollipop by Lil' Wayne).
