2 unusual facts about Downtown Radio


Brian Ervine

In 2005, at a special ceili in the Great Hall of Stormont Parliament Building, hosted by Tommy Sands of Downtown Radio, David Ervine sang "Leaving Dalriada", an emotive ballad written by Brian Ervine, about an exile who was ordered to leave the country by a gunman.

Downtown Radio

The station, also known as DTR or simply Downtown, began broadcasting on 16 March 1976 - the same day as Prime Minister Harold Wilson resigned.


Castle FM

Soon afterwards, Robinson moved away from RSL radio to concentrate on developing his Young Star Search format across Northern Ireland which successfully ran on Belfast Citybeat until his defection to Cool FM and Downtown Radio in 2010.

Queen's Radio

This operated during the first week of term in September 1995 and was hosted by Cool FM DJs and some students, including the now BBC Radio Ulster presenter/producer Donna Legge, Citybeat presenter Stuart Robinson and Downtown Radio DJ Lynda Cullan but was not set up or run by students at Queen's.

Social Sounds

The main sponsor behind the festival is Heineken with Downtown Radio, Cool FM, Europa Hotel and 21 Social also sponsoring the two-day event which takes place over the end of August Bank Holiday.

Wendy Austin

Austin began her career in journalism with The Belfast Telegraph, leaving to join the fledgling Downtown Radio station in 1976, and later that year moving to the BBC where she was a television reporter before moving into radio presentation.
