El-Asmar made several appearances for the Morocco national football team and was selected as a reserve goalkeeper for the 1998 African Cup of Nations finals.

Asmar Latin Sani, from West Sumatra, was the suicide bomber who detonated the car bomb in the August 5 2003 Marriott Hotel bombing.
