Jerome Namias - (1928) - Prominent American meteorologist; former Chief of the Extended Forecast Division of the National Weather Service and was involved in the research of both the Dust Bowl and El Niño phenomena.

Dust Bowl

With the end of the Civil War in 1865 and the completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad in 1869, waves of new immigrants arrived in the Great Plains, and cultivation increased significantly.


Arnold Wilson Cowen

Dallam County was hard hit by the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl, and Cowen found himself involved in federal programs to ameliorate conditions in the region.

Colorado-Big Thompson Project

Prior to the Dust Bowl era, agriculture in this section of the state had relied upon sources such as Boulder Creek, St. Vrain Creek, Little Thompson River, Big Thompson River and the Cache La Poudre River, all of which are a part of the South Platte River basin and flow into the South Platte River before the South Platte reaches Greeley, Colorado.
