In 1938, Hines was accused of being involved in the policy racket with Dutch Schultz (who was murdered in 1935) and Dixie Davis and of violating the "lottery laws".
He recently sang the role of Dutch Schultz in the American concert premiere of Eric Salzman and Valeria Vasilevski's The True Last Words of Dutch Schultz at Symphony Space in New York.
