Carnarvon terms

The Carnarvon terms were a set of proposals ordered by the British colonial secretary Lord Carnarvon in 1874 to settle the dispute between British Columbia and Canada over the construction of the transcontinental railroad and the Vancouver Island railroad and train bridge.

Prime Minister Alexander Mackenzie and Walkem agreed to accept arbitration of the dispute by the Earl of Carnarvon, the Colonial Secretary.

Charles Thomas Newton

In 1889, he was presented by his friends and pupils, under the presidency of the Earl of Carnarvon, with a testimonial in the form of a marble portrait bust of himself by Boehm, now deposited in the Mausoleum room at the British Museum ; the balance of the fund was by his own wish devoted to founding a studentship in connection with the British school at Athens.

Henry Herbert, 6th Earl of Carnarvon

Styled Baron Porchester from birth, he inherited the Earldom of Carnarvon on the death of his father – who was famously funding archaeologist Howard Carter when he discovered the tomb of Tutenkhamun – in 1922.
