He was a Conservative politician and served under the Earl of Derby and Benjamin Disraeli as Under-Secretary of State for War from 1866 to 1868.

Lady Antonia Fraser and Rachel Billington, daughters of the seventh Earl, are both prominent authors.

He was a minor playwright and poet and also sat as a member of the Republic of Ireland Senate between 1946 and 1948.


Sir Samuel Hercules Hayes, 4th Baronet

Hayes was born in 1840 the son of Sir Edmund Samuel Hayes, 3rd Baronet and his wife Emily Pakenham, daughter of Lieutenant-General the Honourable Sir Hercules Pakenham, a son of the Earl of Longford.
