Earl of Lonsdale

Richard Lowther, younger son of the first Baronet, was Member of Parliament for Appleby.

This family descends from Sir Richard Lowther (1532–1607), of Lowther Hall, Westmorland, who served as Lord Warden of the West Marches.

Lady Louisa Stuart

Her sisters were Lady Mary Stuart (c. 1741–1824), who married James Lowther, later the 1st Earl of Lonsdale; Lady Anne Stuart (born c. 1745), who married Lord Warkworth, later the 2nd Duke of Northumberland; Lady Jane Stuart (c. 1748–1828), who married George Macartney, later the first Earl Macartney; and Lady Caroline Stuart (before 1763–1813), who married The Hon.

Professional boxing

In 1909, the first of twenty-two belts were presented by the fifth Earl of Lonsdale to the winner of a British title fight held at the N.S.C. In 1929, the B.B.B.C. continued to award Lonsdale Belts to any British boxer who won three title fights in the same weight division.

The Nab

Anybody approaching from the north will see 'The Bungalow' in Martindale which was formerly a shooting lodge built in 1910 by the Earl of Lonsdale for the visiting Kaiser Wilhelm and is now a holiday cottage available to rent.

West Cumberland Hospital

In 1924, the Earl of Lonsdale sold Whitehaven Castle to Mr H. Walker, who then donated the building to the people of Cumbria, along with monies to convert it into a hospital to replace the Victorian Whitehaven Hospital.


Armathwaite Castle

In 1712 the castle passed into the Sanderson family–one of whom, Robert Sanderson, made the castle the centre of a collection of antiquities and relics–and from there to the Milburns and in 1846 onto William Lowther, the Earl of Lonsdale.

St James' Church, Whitehaven

The painting was given to the church by the 3rd Earl of Lonsdale, and is said to have come from the Escorial.
