6 January - The outward bound East Indiaman Halsewell is wrecked on the Isle of Portland in a storm with only 74 of more than 240 on board surviving.
The two American ships then mistook the British ship of the line HMS Cornwallis for an East Indiaman.

On the morning of 1 September 1809, HMS Nassau was escorting a convoy of East Indiamen in the English Channel when she sighted a strange sail.
The place where they were found was variously set down as Paderborn, Prague, Liège, Antwerp, Glatz, and on board a captured East Indiaman.
In the Action of 4 August 1800, the large East Indiaman Exeter passed herself as a 74-gun ship of the line when she endeavoured to chase the much stronger French frigate Médée; after sunset, she perfected the illusion by opening and illuminating all her gun ports, whether armed or not; her appearance was so convincing that when she caught up with Médée, the frigate struck as if hopelessly overpowered.

In 1795, the two-ship squadron returned to England by way of Cape Horn, capturing a Dutch East Indiaman along the way.
Captain John Rodgers, Lieutenant Porter, and Dr. William Samuel Waithman Ruschenberger, all of the United States Navy did this as did Dr. Raymond, in the American steamer Golden Age, and Captain Henry Toynbee, (F.R.A.S., F.R.A.G.S) of the English East Indiaman the Gloriana.
