From 1981 to 1994, Mayer was Music Director of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.

He is the Community Ambassador and Artist in Residence of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra (following three seasons as Resident Conductor), and was formerly Assistant Conductor of Red (an orchestra), Director and Founder of the Cleveland Bach Consort, and a Discovery Series Conductor at the Oregon Bach Festival.
Dreaming of the Masters III, a three-movement jazz suite for trumpet and orchestra written for Jens Lindemann and commissioned by the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra with funding from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts received its world premiere on September 17, 2010.
