He wrote the words of a large number of songs, including Songs of Even, with music by Frederick Nicholls Crouch (1841), a set of twelve Sacred Songs and Ballads by Edward Loder (1845), and a collection of Songs of Ireland, in which, with Crouch, he fitted old melodies with new words.
Loder's family sent him to Frankfurt in 1826 to study under Ferdinand Ries, who was an old friend of the family.
He sang in the premiere of Edward Loder's Raymond and Agnes at the Theatre Royal, Manchester (14 April 1855) and in the premiere of George Alexander McFarren's opera She Stoops to Conquer at the Drury Lane Theatre (11 February 1864).
The song came to the public attention after being set to music by Edward Loder.
