After receiving his Ph. D., he became a group leader at the Fermi Institute for Nuclear Studies at the University of Chicago and also took up a position at the Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratory in Bedford, Massachusetts.

Edward A. Martell (1920? – July 12, 1995) was an American radiochemist for the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, Colorado.
Having been an assistant to Edward Martell, proprietor of The Sunday Referee, it was to Martell that Speed turned when he had the idea to set up the listings magazine What's On in London.
