Betsey Trotwood plays a bigger role in David Copperfield's later life by taking him in after he has run away from labelling wine bottles in the factory in Blackheath where his stepfather, Edward Murdstone, had placed him to work after the death of David's mother.
Murdstone also arranges for David to live with a friend called Wilkins Micawber, who takes good care of David.
•
After being released from a debtor's prison, Mr Micawber is forced to move to Plymouth and David flees the factory to find his aunt Betsey Trotwood at Dover.
•
This arrangement is done secretly (much to Peggotty's disapproval), while David is away at the Yarmouth seashore.
In her kind motherliness, Peggotty contrasts markedly with the harsh and unloving Miss Murdstone, the sister of David's cruel stepfather Mr Murdstone.
