Over the years, numerous painters were employed at Balmoral, including Edwin and Charles Landseer, Carl Haag, William Wyld, William Henry Fisk, and many others.
An only child, the young Henrietta grew up surrounded by and familiar with her parents' artist acquaintances, including Sir Edwin Landseer, C. R. Leslie, and the brothers John James and Alfred Edward Chalon.
He also lithographed several hundred pictures of the leading artists of the day, especially those of Charles Robert Leslie, Edwin Landseer, George Richmond, and his own special friend John James Chalon; in all 67 of his lithographs were exhibited at the Academy.
Two of his earliest published engravings were after Edwin Landseer, both with other engravers: Peace with T. L. Atkinson (1848), and the Hunted Stag (engraved as Mountain Torrent) with Thomas Landseer (1850) (these both after pictures from the Vernon collection, which went to the National Gallery of British Art).
