From 1938 to 1941 he worked on the literary magazine Taller alongside several of his university colleagues who had taken the path of literature, including Alberto Quintero Álvarez, Octavio Paz and Rafael Solana.
He also worked on scenery for plays and illustrated books for Efraín Huerta, Jaime Labastida and Oscar Oliva.
This led to repression of the group, but they were able to reopen in 1969, with the organization including writers and artists such as Jaime Sabines, Rubén Salazar Mallén, Efraín Huerta, Thelma Nava, Roberto López Moreno, Xorge del Campo, Dionicio Morales, Gerardo de la Torre, René Avilés Fabila and Manuel Blanco.

He was especially fond of 15th-century French poet François Villon, but also read much of the work of Alfonso Reyes, Renato Leduc, Efraín Huerta, Jean Nicolas, Arthur Rimbaud, Paul Valéry, Lord Byron, Goethe, André Malraux, and Paul Éluard .
