Flower and Hawk is based on the life of Eleanor of Aquitaine, arguably the greatest woman of the Middle Ages.
At the same time, Eleanor of Aquitaine, Richard's mother, is working to raise the ransom through more legal methods: by taxing clergy and laymen for a quarter of the value of their property, confiscating the gold and silver treasures of the churches, and imposing scutage and carucage taxes.
Mr. Dudley was a descendant of both Thomas Dudley (1576–1653), of the Massachusetts Bay Corporation, and second governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony; and Henry II of England (1133–1189) and Eleanor of Aquitaine (1122–1204).
In 1993, she played the part of Eleanor of Aquitaine in a stage production of The Lion In Winter which was directed by her former Dark Shadows co-star Jonathan Frid.
Although the figures are intended as Eleanor of Aquitaine, Henry II of England, and William Marshall, the story is an entire invention.
As is made clear by the chapter headings, the fortunes of the family closely parallel the Plantagenet family, including Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine, with the mansion representing the throne.
Pipe Rolls identify the existence of a royal household in the village as early as the 12th century, and that Eleanor of Aquitaine resided there in 1165 while her husband – Henry II – was in Normandy.
