Inspired to visit Africa by the diaries of David Livingstone, Holub travelled to Cape Town, South Africa shortly after graduation and eventually settled near Kimberley to practise medicine.
The common name commemorates the Czech naturalist Emil Holub.
In front of the museum there is a statue to him, as well as to Czech ethnographer Emil Holub, erected in 2005.

Among the city's tourist attractions are the historical center of Pardubice, Kunětice Mountain Castle, the baroque castle in Choltice, the African museum dedicated to Emil Holub in Holice and the recreational area around the river Elbe.
