In June 2011, Wilfert was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star, Japan's second highest honor, by Emperor Akihito.
Bilateral relations were strengthen by the official state visit of Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko in 2007 May.
When Barack Obama became the President and the former US Ambassador to Japan Tom Schieffer resigned, James worked as the chargé d'affaires ad interim from January 15, 2009 until August 20, 2009 when the next Ambassador John Roos presented his credentials to Emperor Akihito.
The hall has hosted many distinguished guests over the centuries and is still used to entertain monarchs and dignitaries, such as Charles, Prince of Wales and Emperor Akihito of Japan, who was welcomed here in 2002.
One of his lifetime highlights was a meeting with the Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko of Japan in 1992 which was attended by President and Mrs. Jon Wefald of Kansas State University and his lifelong friend Professor Clifton Meloan and his wife.
At the opening ceremony of the 30th annual meeting of ISEH, Emperor Akihito of Japan praised the "remarkable results obtained by the ISEH today in the treatment of radiation-related disorders", by contrast to the lack of any effective treatment for such disorders in 1945 when atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
