National Independence Day

The autumn of 1918 marked the end of World War I and the defeat of all three occupiers – Russia was plunged into the confusion of revolution and civil war, the Austria-Hungary fell apart and went into decline and the German Reich bowed to pressure from the forces of the Entente.

Provisional Government of National Defence

At this point the first rifts appeared among the Greek leadership: The very capable Prime Minister, Eleftherios Venizelos, an ardent admirer of Great Britain, supported entry in the war on the side of the Entente, while the King, who had been educated in Germany, married to the Kaiser's sister, and a deep admirer of Prussian militarism, anticipated a German victory.

The establishment of this second Greek state has its origins in the debate over Greece's entry into the war on behalf of the Entente, as advocated by Venizelos, or a Germaophile neutrality as preferred by King Constantine I.

Schlasta

After the initial shock following the mass deployment of Schlastas in the battle of Cambrai the Entente armies quickly enhanced low level air defences in rear areas using machine guns and shell firing Autocannon.

Transylvanian Memorandum

However, activism for union per se was largely held off until after World War I and the Treaty of Trianon, with Romania itself oscillating between alliances with the Central Powers and the Entente, and with the parallel offer made by Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria (the heir apparent) to negotiate for a compromise (see United States of Greater Austria).

Ulrich von Brockdorff-Rantzau
