Due to his efforts in countering the generalized control proposals in the field of electronic communications (he is mostly known for his report on privacy in electronic communications) he was awarded the European of the Year title by the weekly newspaper "European Voice".
He remained in Brussels until 2009 and wrote on Belgian politics in The Bulletin, and on European affairs in The Guardian (London), the Financial Times, the Times Literary Supplement, European Voice, and other newspapers in several countries.
In 2001, Ilgenfritz was one of several Members of European Parliament to declare their personal financial interests on their personal parliamentary websites as part of a campaign led by the European Voice.
