Ewald summation, named after Paul Peter Ewald, is a method for computing the interaction energies of periodic systems (e.g. crystals), particularly electrostatic energies.
•
The Ewald summation was developed by Paul Peter Ewald in 1921 (see References below) to determine the electrostatic energy (and, hence, the Madelung constant) of ionic crystals.
Born in Dubberow near Belgard(Dobrowo), Pomerania, Germany , Ewald von Kleist-Schmenzin supported the nationalist-conservative and anti-semitic German National People's Party (Deutschnationale Volkspartei).
He was the son of Carl Ludwig Ewald von Schlabrendorff (Berlin, 5 April 1854 – Detmold, 4 February 1923) and wife Ida Freiin von Stockmar (Buch, 27 September 1874 – 26 March 1944), a great-great-granddaughter of William I, Elector of Hesse by his mistress Rosa Dorothea Ritter.
The corresponding geometric distortion has been extensively studied by Michael Polanyi introducing the concept of Polanyi's sphere (German: "Lagenkugel") intersecting Ewald's sphere.

Ewald received his early education in the classics at the Gymnasium in Berlin and Potsdam, where he learned to speak Greek, French, and English, in addition to his native language of German.
•
According to Ewald, the impetus for the method came from a skiing holiday in Mittenwald, at Easter, in 1911.
PBC can be used in conjunction with Ewald summation methods (usually particle mesh Ewald) of accounting for electrostatic forces in the system.
