Destroyer Squadron 1

Following the conclusion of the Gilbert and Marshall campaign, DESRON-1 destroyers screened Task Group 58.1 during carrier air stikes against Palau, Yap, Ulithi, Woleai, Truk, Satawan, and Ponape.

Destroyer Squadron 50

For much of 1944, the squadron operated together with Admiral Marc Mitscher’s Fast Carrier Task Force, screening USS Enterprise and a number of other carriers in Rear Admiral John W. Reeves’ Task Group during the Marshall Islands and Marianas operations.

Japanese oiler Irō

On March 31, 1944 the ship was attacked and sunk in Palau Harbor by United States Navy aircraft carrier aircraft from the Fast Carrier Task Force during Operation Desecrate One.

Take Ichi convoy

While Japanese officers attributed a drop in sinkings during March to the changed tactics, this was actually due to the U.S. Pacific Fleet's submarines being diverted to support raids conducted by the Fast Carrier Task Force that month.
