5 unusual facts about Flinders Street


1952 VFL season

In May 1952, as part of its promotion of the Burt Lancaster movie Ten Tall Men, the management of the Melbourne cinema The State Theatre on the corner of Flinders Street and Russell Street (now known as the Forum Theatre) measured the height of the ten tallest VFL players.

Campbell Arcade, Melbourne

The arcade is located underground off of Flinders Street and features a selection of indie merchandise, ranging from fashion and jewellery shops and a record stores.

Fawcett and Ashworth

Flinders Street Station became an icon for Melbourne and its famous clocks a meeting point for generations of Melbournians.

Flinders Street, Adelaide

It is named after the navigator and cartographer Captain Matthew Flinders.

Alamein railway line

Craigieburn railway line

In May 1919, Flinders Street to Essendon, along with the Sandringham line, became the first line to be electrified in Melbourne, apart from a test installation on the Flemington Racecourse line.

George Ward Cole

In the following year he purchased land on the Yarra River, and constructed the well-known Cole's Wharf in Flinders Street West, where Hugh Childers acted as a tally-clerk on his first arrival in the colony.

Lilydale railway line

Electrification took place between Flinders Street and Box Hill in December 1922, and extended to Ringwood the following month, then Croydon in November 1925 and finally to Lilydale in October 1925.
