In 2010, Dorworth was elected by his fellow Republicans to serve as Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives during the 2014-2016 term, provided Republicans maintained control of the Florida House of Representatives.
On February 27, 2007, he was elected to the Florida House to succeed Holly Benson, who had been appointed to head the Department of Business and Professional Regulation by then Governor Charlie Crist.
In 2012, when Florida House districts were redrawn, Grant opted to run in the newly created 45th District, which included most of the territory he had previously represented in the 47th District, but added parts of Pinellas County.
On November 4, 2009, Bennett introduced Senate Bill 598, part of a joint resolution with Republicans Baxter Troutman and Kevin Ambler in the Florida House of Representatives to increase length of terms for senators to six years, and state representatives to four years, capping years of service for all state lawmakers, elected county officials and municipal officers to 12 consecutive years in office.
