From an empirical examination of past battles the Prussian military theorist Carl von Clausewitz was able to conclude:-

Mobile anti-tank teams and counterattacking NATO armies would seek to cut off the leading Soviet echelons from its supporting echelons and then reduce the isolated elements with superior air power and conventional munitions, and if this failed, with nuclear munitions.
They would then create an angled or oblique formation, refuse the weakened flank and attack the strongest flank of the enemy with a concentration of force.
