In 1886, Duveneck married one of his students who was much admired by Henry James, Boston-born Elizabeth Boott.
There he was introduced to figure painting under the tutelage of Stanley Reckless who studied at the Philadelphia Academy of Art and taught in the tradition of Frank Duveneck and the Munich School.

There, he was encouraged to explore Western subjects by fellow artists Frank Duveneck, Joseph Henry Sharp, and Henry Farny, who were teaching at the Art Academy of Cincinnati.
At 14 years of age, he enrolled in night classes at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, the faculty of which included Frank Duveneck (1848–1919), James Roy Hopkins (1877–1969), Lewis Henry Meakin (1850–1917), and Herman Henry Wessel (1878–1969).
