Ritter sent for Hilde and the children who travelled from Los Angeles to Chicago on the famed Santa Fe Railroad Super Chief and they stayed in Chicago for several months while Julian completed his commissions.

There he was introduced to figure painting under the tutelage of Stanley Reckless who studied at the Philadelphia Academy of Art and taught in the tradition of Frank Duveneck and the Munich School.
