The channel was launched on 15 January 2003 as UK Bright Ideas, initially for the Freeview digital terrestrial television platform, but later expanded to other platforms.

However, in January 2005, it began showing programmes branded by UKTV Sport, presumably to increase potential audience figures by extending the programme to Freeview viewers.
She also hosted the now defunct Quiz Night Live, a premium rate call-in quiz show, shown on satellite/Freeview channel Ftn.
For the duration of the 2012 Summer Paralympics, Channel 4 operated three high-definition channels dedicated to the Paralympics on Freesat, Sky and Virgin Media, as well as one channel on Freeview.
Following the removal of the BT Sport Preview promotional channel, and the remaining Top Up TV services, from the DTT platform at the start of November 2013, the shopping channel Marketplace (on Freeview channel 50) increased its broadcast hours to provide a round-the-clock shopping service; TGGC leased a four-hour programming block on this station to allow the Jewellery Maker Late Show to be simulcast.
BBC Alba is the only Gaelic language television service available in Scotland, broadcasting digital terrestrial platform Freeview, as well as Sky, Virgin Media and Freesat.
It later added broadcasts on the internet, Freeview channel 725,(UK and Ireland), Sky Digital (channel 0123, terminated 14 December 2012), Virgin Media (channel 968, terminated 6 May 2009) and London DAB - a national DAB broadcast was added later.
WKD was a sponsor of the "WKD Shed Sports Show" which aired on Nuts TV, which had its own channel on Freeview and Sky but closed on 15 January 2009.
