It was the first animated feature film to receive an X rating in the United States and the most successful independent animated feature to date.

Vaughn Bodē

Bodē was a friend of animator Ralph Bakshi, and warned him against working with Robert Crumb on the animated film adaptation of Crumb's strip Fritz the Cat.


Martin Taras

Taras also served as animator and/or designer for television programs such as Batfink, Spider-Man (The 1967 series), Josie and the Pussycats, Super Friends; and for theatrical motion pictures such as Fritz The Cat, Lord of the Rings, and Wizards.

X rating

From the late 1960s to about the mid-1980s, several mainstream films were released with an X rating such as Midnight Cowboy, Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, A Clockwork Orange, Fritz the Cat, Last Tango in Paris and The Evil Dead.
