unusual facts about Furness Railway

Sharp, Stewart and Company

The company provided a number of 0-4-0 tender engines for the Furness Railway of which Number 20, built in 1863 has been restored to working order by the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway in Cumbria.

James Brunlees

This was a short but difficult and important railway to link the Furness Railway network to the Lancaster and Carlisle Railway line and thence to all points further south in the British network.

Lakeside, Cumbria

It was established as a steamer pier for services along the lake when the Lakeside branch of the Furness Railway reached it in 1869, meaning that steamer services no longer had to negotiate the River Leven to Newby Bridge.

Whitehaven, Cleator and Egremont Railway

In reality this was an independent railway to the WC&ER as it was jointly owned by the WC&ER and the Furness Railway and was known as the Cleator and Furness Railway, although it was worked by the WC&ER.
